A Hurricane and a Earthquake

No the title of this blog post is not the title of my new favorite Indie flick..it's actually what I experienced last week. That's right folks, the Nelsons made it through both a hurricane and an earthquake in ONE week! I may need a massage and therapy after all the craziness...
Anyway, one thing I had time to reflect on, (after everything had died down)was my reaction to the disasters when they were happening. I had always envisioned myself being a pillar of strength during a crisis- calm, cool, collected, and doing exactly what needed to be done in order to survive. Turns out this is not the case AT ALL. For instance, when the earthquake hit Tuesday afternoon I was in the living room chatting on the phone with my mom while Samuel was sleeping peacefully in his crib. When the apartment started to shake here is what I did... (at least according to my mom cuz I don't remember all of it so well..)

ME: Mom, the apartment is shaking!
MOM: It's probably just the people next door moving stuff around or something..
ME: (I'm screaming now) NO, the apartment is literally moving back and forth!!!!!!
MOM: Ok, it might be an earthquake get under a doorway...
I'm literally running around in circles now
ME: Right a doorway..I'll be safe there! Wait, I have a baby! What about my baby?!?!?!?
I'm still running in circles....
MOM: GET THE BABY AND GET UNDER A DOORWAY!
ME: Right! I'll save Samuel!!!!
Still running in circles....

Anyway, by the time I got to Samuel the whole ordeal was over. I didn't even make it near a doorway in time...=(

So, all in all, here is what I learned...

1) I can't save myself or anyone else during a natural disaster...
2) Earthquakes cause buildings to shake back and forth not people in other apartments.
3) When I am in a natural disaster it's probably a good idea to get off the phone and concentrate on surviving...

I think God is trying to tell me something in all of this..maybe it's "Welcome to the east coast." (?)
